About this deal

My girls were very excited about playing with it, and they fought over who got to play with it first. Eventually, I broke the silly putty into two pieces and let each of them have one! Now, the dough will be ready to play with. Why not add other objects such as rice, oats, or sprinkles to the sensory putty? This will add an extra dimension and element of texture to your child’s sensory play. Challenge children to make a creation out of the putty, either in groups or individually. They’ll be able to explore their creative instincts whilst enjoying all the fun of a sensory play session at the same time! There is something so satisfying about playing with silly putty. When I was young, I remember spending hours squishing, molding, and stretching it (which helps develop fine motor skills in little fingers, by the way!).

Any time I had a spare dollar, I always spent it on new silly putty because it was so much fun to make a worm, balls, and many other shapes (an “s” that I could turn into a snake was a personal favorite!). Sort of. The store-bought kind has a different set of chemicals, many of which would be quite challenging to reproduce as you learn how to make your own putty. Welcome friend! Note: You may need to adjust the amount of soap used depending on the humidity of your room.It was dry in our house, so we used almost a full cup of soap. If you make it during the hot summer months, you may not need as much soap. Step 2 To make this sensory putty recipe with your child at home, or with your class in school; just follow these simple instructions:

This DIY putty recipe is even easier than most. It’s borax-free and doesn’t contain any white glue. Plus, it only has two ingredients (three if you want to color your silly putty). Mix some borax with warm water. Pour ½ cup (120 milliliters) of warm water into a cup. Add 1 teaspoon of borax. Stir the two together until the borax has dissolved. The putty should now feel like hard rubber and won't yield at all. a b "Silly Putty History". Crayola LLC. Archived from the original on June 3, 2008 . Retrieved March 28, 2013. Add the cornstarch and 1/2 cup liquid soap (use the lesser amount to start with) into a medium-sized bowl and mix.Clear, gel-like soaps do best.Certain types of soap are not suited to this activity; you’ll have the best results with soap that has the consistency of hair gel. You may get food dye on your hands but we found that the soap and oil in the homemade silly putty recipe help make the color easy to wash off with soap and water. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. Silly Putty's unusual flow characteristics are due to the ingredient polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a viscoelastic substance. Viscoelasticity is a type of non-Newtonian flow, characterizing a material that acts as a viscous liquid over a long time period but as an elastic solid over a short time period. [7] Because its apparent viscosity increases directly with respect to the amount of force applied, Silly Putty can be characterized as a dilatant fluid. [5] During World War II, Japan invaded rubber-producing countries as it expanded its sphere of influence in the Pacific Rim. Rubber was vital for the production of rafts, tires, vehicle and aircraft parts, gas masks, and boots. In the US, all rubber products were rationed; citizens were encouraged to make their rubber products last until the end of the war and to donate spare tires, boots, and coats. Meanwhile, the government funded research into synthetic rubber compounds to attempt to solve this shortage. [11]

NOTE:Certain types of liquid soap will NOT work for this homemade silly putty recipe. Clear, gel-like soaps or soaps that have the consistency of hair gel or conditioner will work the best. Stir everything together with a spoon, then switch to using your hands. At first, you will get a crumbly mixture, but then it will turn into a gel the more you work with it. Don't worry if there is some corn starch or dish soap at the bottom of the bowl. [6] X Research sourcea b Nowak, Peter (2011).
