About this deal

HD Digital Frame is a great way to put your portfolio on display and a great way to surface forgotten memories. As always, it is a good idea to update to the latest firmware release, as it might address bugs, as well as add more camera support in the future. Once again I’d recommend selecting the option to copy new files only, otherwise your drive will fill up fast with duplicated content.

Use My Passport Wireless Pro as a Wi-Fi hub and share an Internet connection with up to eight (8) separate devices.Secondly, if you connect the drive to a network and enable sharing, then any device on that network will be able to access it – this is great for using the drive as a wireless NAS, but obviously you wouldn’t want to connect it to a public network and enable the same sharing rights.

It is exciting to see manufacturers like Western Digital create efficient and portable backup solutions for photographers.

Once power is connected, the four LCD indicator lights will blink and provide information on how much charging is left to do. Above: One on side of the drive you’ll find a spring-loaded SD slot which like those in camera bodies will swallow a card whole without any portion sticking out; push it in and it’ll spring out sufficiently for you to grab it. WD isn’t the only company to offer self-contained storage solutions designed to operate without a laptop. If you connect wirelessly, whether directly or via an access point, multiple devices can access the device simultaneously and there’s no need for cables; connecting via a shared access point also means your device still enjoys internet connectivity (assuming the access point also does), but data transfer to and from the drive will be slower than a direct connection. By default, the option is not enabled, which means that you would first have to insert a memory card, then press the “Battery / SD” button on the side of the device to start the backup process.

Many camera brands and models are supported from a number of different manufacturers, including Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus and others. You can either do this using the free WD My Cloud app for Android or iOS smartphones and tablets, or via a web browser on a computer. Aside from its large and bulky size, my biggest gripe is with the I/O ports that Western Digital incorporated into the unit. connectivity is a non starter and the bulk and weight of an unneeded power bank misses the point of a light and fast back-up solution for the field.

This made navigating through large folders of images so much easier, and the app overall felt more confident and responsive, generating thumbnails quickly and making it easy to save them onto the device for subsequent posting or sharing. You can only imagine how painful it will be to transfer files from XQD, CFast and other fast media types…you will need to wait a while for the process to finish. Launched in January 2018, it essentially takes the existing My Passport Wireless model and switches the traditional spinning hard drive for a solid state drive, or SSD for short. Previously, I’d have to select photos I wanted to edit/share back of my camera, then transfer them via Bluetooth to my iPad.
