KIRK AND SWEENEY was a wooden schooner, best known for smuggling rum from the Caribbean to the Northeast during the early years of Prohibition.

Reserva might well imply it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were much younger rums in the blend.

I'm not one who normally drinks rum straight but the Kirk and Sweeney 12 year rum is so smooth that it actually might be one I could enjoy neat. The schooner was subsequently renamed “Chase” and pressed into duty as a Coast Guard trainer, serving until the late 1940’s when it was retired and salvaged. This distillery is now one of the largest in the Dominican Republic and has a rich family heritage going back over 100 years. This deep mahogany coloured rum presents a sweet aroma balanced heavily toward cane honey, with earthy sugar cane undertones, along with a hint of vanilla, luscious toasted oak, caramel and dried fruits. The aroma of this rum is a delicate balance of dried fruits, sweet toasted breads, toffee, honey, and caramelised sugar, with faint notes of sherry and raisins.The Bermúdez distillery indeed uses time-tested ancestral methods to extract the best from ingredients and produce a liquor of unparalleled quality, all while minimizing their ecological footprint. The ageing process also brings out the cane honey flavour, which is sweet but not overpowering, and is balanced by the earthy undertones. I let it sit for about 5 minutes before smelling and there was a strong presence of vanilla, caramel, sugar and oak. I occasionally got some mild fruit but nothing substantial, maybe a hint of orange rind and apricot, really not sure.

Anyway the 12 year reserva is a decent but not great rum hint of citrus some alcohol scent and burn. However based upon how good the 12 year it, I expect the 23 year rum to be, at least, equally as good.Twenty three years spent in American Oak barrels, housed in brick at the distillery, has lent every bottle a touch of dried fruit, sherry and honey. This is unrivaled XO rum from Kirk and Sweeney with a highly polished color of deep amber with light golden hues. These 3 Dominican rums are made in a traditional way and then aged in American white oak barrels for 12, 18, or 23 years. Aged in American oak barrels in the Dominican Republic, it has a beautiful mahogany color and expresses complex flavors of cane sugar, dried fruit, vanilla and toasted oak.
