About this deal

So far I have connected them to 3 different devices, Phone, PC and TV and they all work simultaneously with no issues whatsoever. During the test, we also noticed that if you put the whole of your left palm across the left earpiece, the Crusher ANC occasionally acknowledges this with a loud feedback loop.

With that said, if you’re a bass head, consider the Crusher mode as a challenge, granted, one where the novelty wears off quickly. And you can take that literally, because when it comes to “feeling” music, hardly any of the American Lifestyle-Companies are kidding. The result of an extremely exaggerated bass is, of course, a more spongy frequency image that tends to swallow up any subtle nuances. Under the lid it continues to convince with a dark grey fabric case serving as a safe home for the foldable headphones, accompanying mini jack and USB charging cable. The bass-accentuated, warm tone gives the Crusher ANC a free and easy personality and suggests an ideal companion for everyday listening.A dial is used for instant access to the Crusher bass presets if you press it to cycle through, or you can scroll to find the sweet spot for you. The Multipoint tile helps you set up a connection with more than one device at a time, while the Find With Tile option enables a built-in location-based feature that helps you find your headphones if you lose them. The Skull-iQ app (available for Android and iOS) lays out its myriad controls in an accessible assortment of tiles that sit below an image of the headphones and a battery readout on the main screen.

The headphones output audio via a pair of 40mm drivers, and even before I engaged the sensory bass function, it became clear that Skullcandy’s reputation for deeply resonant bass is alive and well with the Crusher ANC 2. At super-low bass settings, you can somewhat enjoy these tracks, but anything past the 20% threshold causes audio artifacts (such as unintentional rumbles) to randomly emerge. Through a partnership with Mimi Hearing Technologies (an audio processing startup), you are able to personalize the overall sound profile of the headphones too, by taking a hearing test found in the companion Skull-iQ app.

The Crusher ANC 2 is a handsome pair of headphones and I fully welcome the inclusion of numerous physical buttons to control various aspects of playback compared to touch and gesture controls found on most other premium models. In terms of control, this model has a multifunction button on the left side of the handset, which controls the pairing, battery check and active noise cancelling, as well as switching on/off.

Skullcandy has thrown so much into the Crusher ANC 2 that I was disappointed to not see a kitchen sink mentioned in the specs list. The app might feel slightly overwhelming in its scope but some sections are more essential than others. It is nice to see that Skullcandy offers a more discreet and visually work-friendly set of headphones without having to compromise on your inner child’s bassy taste. It's just too bad it makes some compromises along the way: Compared to the previous generation Crusher 360 that had a metal construction, Skullcandy has gone with a mostly plastic build for the Crusher ANC. You can connect and remap buttons to your liking, and the Skullcandy IQ app performs speedy updates.
