About this deal

Annie Ernaux chose literature to explore her ambivalent feelings towards her father and her background. Not really a surprise that this is another 5-star read in Ernaux’s oeuvre, as it’s similar to the stories she wrote about her mother, only the central character here is her father.

She is obviously feeling guilty for distancing herself from her father while transitioning towards middle class. Annie Ernaux climbed up the social ladder and landed in the academic middle-class world through school. annie ernaux’nun ergenliğinde babasıyla arasındaki çatlışma, babasından utanması, anlaşamaması, sonrasında burjuva kocasıyla yaşadığı yabancılık… bunlar da var üstelik.cuốn sách gây ấn tượng bởi sự giản dị và đi vào lòng tôi bởi sự chân thành, tình yêu của người con gái đối với bố nhưng lại cứ tỏ ra dửng dưng, chối bỏ tình cảm ấy. I think there was quite a lot of this kind of social dislocation when postwar reforms gave educational opportunities to people who had never had them before.

She reflects upon the deficiency of the language to portray the simple, ungraceful country life of father.

But it was that “experience of limitation”, that unwritten rule “not to venture above your station in life”, that defined the tough world of factories and farm-workers she grew up in, she says . if i were to judge a country based on its books, i would assume that France is draped in perpetual winter. It’s like reliving memories as you do with old suppressed memories, sometimes to re-imagine them, sometimes to get away with them. The men of that generation (and perhaps most generations) operate behind a frosted glass wall that diffuses direct emotional connection.
